Tunes: Holiday Edition
If you’re anything like me, you cherish the period of time between November and January and You might only celebrate for the sake of celebrating. As someone who has a Jewish mother, a Christian father, and didn’t grow up with the influence of religion, I ended up with a broad sense of spirituality rather than a serious dedication to any particular practice. that being said, I still absolutely love the winter holiday season. gift-giving is one of my love languages for others, hence I love shopping for gifts for my loved ones that I know will have meaning and value to them. I love decorating the house, sipping hot cocoa, watching holiday films (especially the cheesy hallmark and lifetime ones), and of course, listening to Christmas/Hanukkah/holiday tunes! I also like to start listening in November—don’t @ me please—and continue through at least new years if not longer. this year has been cause for extra cheer considering the crappy card the world has been dealt in 2020. I find that I’m particularly drawn to a mix of folky and pop-centric tunes and really appreciate it when the singer or band is made up of women or queer people, so many songs in my playlist feature none other than women and queers. (how fitting for me!?) SOme favs to pay attention to: girl in red with her sultry swooning, Miki Ratsula’s vibey, queer takes on holiday classics, and my all-time fav—Brenda Lee’s rendition of ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas tree.’ So merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and very happy holidays to all! Please enjoy these time-sensitive tunes for as long as you might need.
